Dear Mrs Zander

Last week we made kites because the letter of the week was Kk and kite starts with K. We also know that Ksharne, Kierra, Kiwi, Kangaroo and Kookaburra start with K. Mrs Duxfield told us that the you said the Kookaburra would wake you up in the morning! Have you seen a Kangaroo in Australia? We all want to know if Ella had a good birthday? We think it's funny that Ella is scared of the Ibis bird. We hope you are having a phenomenal time. We miss you.

The maple leaf is red and it comes from the maple tree like maple syrup. The flag is red and white, it has three stripes and it has a maple leaf on it. Mounties are policemen who ride horses. We hope the All Blacks win on Saturday. GO ALL BLACKS!

Our new trainset

Mr Soutar bought a new trainset for room 9 children to play with. What do you think of it? They children think it is fantastic.

Ronald McDonald's visit

Room 9 and 3 had a Ronald McDonald visit them to tell them about road safety.

He said:
- "Stop, look and listen before you cross the road.
- "Wear your helmet when you ride your bike."
- "Put the seatbelt on when you ride in the car."

He lost his red and white stripey sock. The children found the sock behind his back. He sang a song for us.

He liked Awapuni School and the children's smiles and sitting up.

We were really surprised and we felt sterling about his visit.

Fish pictures

Here are some photos of us creating our artworks for the hall.

Cross Country

Today at school we held the annual cross country event. The junior school course is around the front field, and then half way around again.

Well done to all those that ran today - you can be proud of yourselves. Special praise to our champions Aria and Amotai - you trained hard and deserved to get a trophy.

You can make a happy cake.

All week we read a big book called 'The fantastic cake.' As a treat, we made our own cake. It is called a happy cake. It is based on a Junior reader.

Now you too can make your own happy cake.

Melt 100g of margerine/butter in the microwave.

Add: 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence, 1 cup of sugar and mix well.

Next add: 1 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/4 cup of cocoa and mix well again.

Pour into a 20cm dish and microwave for 5-7mins on high. Cool a little in the dish.

Cut out face shapes and place place them on the cake. Sprinkle with icing sugar. Remove paper carefully.

Admire and eat the cake.

Queen's Birthday

We learned about why we have a holiday on Monday. You could ask your child:
  • Is it really the Queen' birthday? - the answer is no. Her birthday is in April. It is the anniversary of her coronation or being crowned as a Queen.
  • Is the Queen a girl or Boy? We also discussed some princes become kings and some princesses become queens. The children thought that Whaea Christina would make a good Queen of Awapuni School and Mr Soutar the King. Mrs Zander is the Queen of room 9.
  • What gifts did the Queen get at her coronation? The royal jewels - her crown, an orb (ball) and the septer (stick). She sat on a throne.
  • What gift did she give her loyal servants? A day off - or holiday.
We also looked at some real photos of the queen, in scarves and hats, with her pets, riding in a carriage and her image on our coin money.

We finished this section off by making our own crowns.

Friday 3 June - Wow! what a day.

Today at school we found out about Queen's Birthday, We finished our artwork for the hall, baked a cake and had the Cross Country. Check out our blogs about it.

30 May - 3 June

Hello to all.
This week in class we are learning the letter 'Ff', the blend 'ph' and to read the word 'for'.
In maths we continue addition and subtraction to 5 and 10. You could also ask your child to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.
The children write stories everyday so you could talk about what they could write about.
Don't forget Room 3s Assembly this week on Wednesday at 2.30pm and the Cross Country on Friday afternoon.

Homework superstars.

Well done to Aria, Amotai and Ksharne. Your homework from last week was exemplary. All three of you did very well at maths, reading and especially spelling.
